Jill Biden, the U.S. Secretary of State, arrived in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday. She is on her second leg of a six-day tour that will take her to the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. Her goal is to empower women and promote the education of young people.
She arrived in Cairo from Amman on Thursday, after attending the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein with Saudi architect Rajwa Alsei F. She will travel to Morocco on Sunday before continuing to Portugal on Monday, her final destination.
The nuptials held in Jordan were not only attended by a list of stars, including Prince William and Kate from Britain -- but they also had a deep significance for the entire region. They highlighted continuity in a country that is prized for stability.
Egypt has been a U.S. allie for many years and is one of America's largest Mideast recipients of economic and military assistance. In recent years, U.S. legislators have tried to condition this aid on reforms and improvements in human rights.
Biden was greeted by Egypt's First Lady Entissar Amer on the tarmac. He then met with President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, before visiting a school for technical training in the capital.
Vanessa Valdivia told The Associated Press, last week, that Biden's spokeswoman would also be focusing the visit of the first lady to Egypt on U.S. investment programs that support education.
Since coming to power, el-Sissi has led a government that has been ruthless in its crackdown against dissent. Thousands have been imprisoned. The government has targeted not just Islamist political opposition but also prodemocracy, journalists and internet critics.
Biden will be making her first trip to the Middle East in her role as First Lady. In February, she visited Namibia and Kenya.
