China expressed concerns over escalating tensions in the Middle East after Iran launched a large-scale attack on Israel, potentially leading to a wider conflict. China urged all parties to exercise calm and restraint and called on the international community to play a constructive role in maintaining regional peace and stability. The Iranian assault, in retaliation for a bombing in Damascus, marked the first direct strike on Israel from Iranian soil. The United States has sought China’s help in de-escalating the situation and preventing a regional war. China’s influence over Iran and its ability to influence behavior remain uncertain. While China has significant economic ties with Iran, it is reluctant to weaponize these relationships and considers the conflict in Gaza as the root cause of tensions. Other Asian countries, including Japan and India, have also expressed concerns and called for de-escalation and a return to diplomatic efforts.
